Is it possible that some were not corrupted by power, but simply "Niced" there way to the top at which point they felt there was nothing to lose being themselves?
So they lied about their niceness? Probably. I'm not sure, though, that most people can play a game like that for that long. I tend to think we become exhausted lying about who we are.
